Back in June we were approached by Calcutta Mercy, a 'non-profit organization on a mission to feed, educate and medically assist the poor of Calcutta'. The charity had been looking for a new website as part of a recent re-branding exercise and were exploring Squarespace as a platform. They found Hive Social on the Specialists Page and got in touch with their brief!
We were honoured to be approached by the charity and hugely proud to be part of a fantastic cause.
Having recently completed a rebrand of Calcutta Mercy Ministries, the US based charity needed a website that reflected their new image and message. Having taken inspiration from various other charity websites. namely Charity:Water, they had a fairly clear idea about what sort of style they were looking for. They had chosen the Bedford Template as this gave them the navigation style that they were looking for. As well as the Squarespace based front end, Calcutta Mercy also required a 'Create Campaign' feature that sat along side the main site. This allows supporters the opportunity to start their own fundraising campaign through the website, share via social media as well as log in to a members area and track their progress! In order to achieve this we worked with our developer partner Millwood Online.
What We Did
Working with various people at Calcutta Mercy in different places (US, Calcutta & Indonesia!) we helped develop and optimise the web content for all pages of the website before creating the Squarespace skeleton. The new website included some 60+ content rich pages as well as a web store and donation functionality. The main site content is split into 3 central categories: FEED, EDUCATE & MEDICALLY ASSIST, with additional About Us, Store, Blog, Donate and of course 'My Calcutta Mercy' sections. The team had also put together a comprehensive selection of high quality images and we were given the freedom to place them where we felt appropriate. This gave us a really good chance to get to know the charity and the people that they work with / support in Calcutta.
We worked through each section closely with the team at Calcutta Mercy to ensure that a) we were nailing their expectations and b) everyone was happy with the final copy / design of each page throughout the project. We find website projects are much easier to manage this way, both for us and the client. We adopt this approach with all projects and pride ourselves on be extremely responsive throughout website build projects. Whilst this was happening, the guys at Millwood Online were working hard on the 'My Calcutta Mercy' web app, which sits seamlessly alongside the Squarespace site.
Once we had populated the main content of the site we took the time make final tweaks to layout, colour palette and content flow. This was then followed by a period of testing on various mobile devices and browsers to ensure that the new Calcutta Mercy website was fully responsive and the experience was just as comfortably for the mobile user.
For a project like this one having expert communication is extremely important, particularly when working with people from different countries and timezones! We definitely put in some late nights here at Hive Social, but the process was incredibly enjoyable and we are extremely grateful to the awesome team at Calcutta Mercy!
We're glad to say that Calcutta Mercy are extremely happy with the results and are due to officially relaunch the brand very shortly!
The best way to get a feel for it is to have a nose around! www.calcuttamercy.org. We've also put together a few shots of the main pages in the gallery below.
